Pesticides and animal health products treat pests and diseases, so are an important part of sustainable food production.
- Pesticides allow farmers to maximise crop yields.
- Animal health products help keep production animals disease-free and control nuisance pests.
What is resistance?
Pests and micro-organisms can become resistant to the treatments designed to control them. Antimicrobial resistance describes a natural phenomenon where micro-organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi, lose sensitivity to the effects of antimicrobial medicines, like antibiotics that were previously effective in treating infections.
Resistance can lead to the loss of a product which is important to farmers and growers.
We support programmes that prolong the effectiveness of crop protection and animal health products liable to encounter resistance problems, and limit losses should resistance appear.
