What’s at stake: the global R&D innovation pipeline

The global pipeline of new crop protection products represents the next generation of innovation—solutions designed to replace older chemistry with products that deliver lower environmental impact, more flexible and targeted application, reduced residues, and benefits for food safety, trade, and pollinator health. These tools are vital for farmers and growers as they battle pests and diseases, ensuring productivity and resilience across the primary sector.

Due to ongoing delays in the regulatory process and uncertainty of timeframes for approvals, many of these products may never reach New Zealand as R&D companies, many of whom are APHANZ members assess their future in the New Zealand market. Without change, our farmers and growers risk being left behind, unable to access the innovations already available overseas.

Based on data provided by CropLife Asia using source data obtained from the “Crop Protection Company R&D” (July 2024) report, published by AgbioInvestor, APHANZ's table of "What's at stake: the global R&D innovation pipeline" provides a snapshot the crop protection products in development and available overseas. New Zealand farmers and growers will not benefit from these innovative products and New Zealand will fall further behind if urgent improvements are not made to the regulatory approval process.
